Our school just sent a team to a four-day training on how to implement a
school wide system of academic and behavioral interventions as part of our continuous
school improvement process. We took a close look at the four types of
school data – demographic, perception, achievement, and programs/process – and began
planning ways we will support students who need extra help with reading, math,
and writing, beginning with effective instruction and behavioral supports in
each class. We are looking closely at each
student’s test scores, from their HSA in middle school to their current STAR
reading and math scores. Those data
points, along with grades, attendance, and teacher recommendations will
determine which students will be placed in secondary support classes like a
Reading/Writing or Math Workshop class next year so we can help bring up skill
levels. Parents of students whose
schedules need to be changed will be advised before school releases for summer. In the interim, please encourage your student
to take all tests seriously, especially STAR and Achieve, as we will use the
information from those assessments to select students for support classes.
