Measles, ice cream social, and Halloween

Aloha everyone,

You may have heard on the news last week that there were two reported cases of measles on Kauai (not WHS).  Please click on this link to our school website; it contains a fact sheet from the Department of Health that describes symptoms and treatment of measles for your information ---Department of Health Measles Fact sheet

This week Wednesday, the PTSA is sponsoring an ice cream social for WHS students who received at least a 3.0 GPA or received NO "U" GLO marks -- when Ms. Asahi and I went through each report card last week, we counted 340 students who qualify for this award.  Please have your student go to the table fronting the main office during lunch on Wednesday to claim his/her prize; the list of eligible students will be posted at the office.

Students have been told that they may dress up for Halloween on Friday but they have to follow dress code requirements -- no midriff showing, no tank tops (boys), no spaghetti/backless (girls).   Please remind your student to choose an appropriate costume or report to school in uniform on Friday.

School is on for tomorrow, Monday October 20, 2014

Just received word from Mr. Arakaki and the Superintendent's office on Oahu that all schools are open tomorrow.  If there are any changes, he will advise us ASAP.  Thank you very much; see you all at school tomorrow.

Hurricane fatigue?

Yes, preparing once again for another tropical storm/hurricane took up quite a bit of time and energy last week/this weekend.  Teachers and staff were hustling to cover and move furniture, equipment, and mobile labs into secure areas as Waimea HS is usually designated as a shelter during emergencies.  I'm sending this out on Saturday afternoon, hoping big time that Ana will pass us by with minimal effect.

Welcome back to quarter 2!

Aloha everyone and welcome back to school.  As we begin quarter 2 this week, please encourage your student to recommit himself/herself to academic excellence and to the philosophy of “he wa’a, he moku; he moku, he wa’a” or building academic and personal skills needed in order to be college and career ready.  

Teachers will be finalizing grades this week; students who have earned a 3.0 GPA or all S marks for their GLOs will receive a treat later this month sponsored by our PTSA while those who received 3 or more U marks for their GLOs will be placed on behavioral probation.   Those students will have to clear grades and GLOs from their teachers in order to participate in any extracurricular activities this quarter.
