Graduation.... Happy Summer!

Hello everyone,

Graduation was awesome last Friday; the weather was beautiful and the company was great.  Our guest speaker, US Senator Brian Schatz gave an inspirational message to our seniors, outlining his six key pieces of advice and our seven valedictorians gave theirs as they spelled out WAIMEA.  Other guests on stage included Board of Education Kauai representative, Nancy Budd, State Senate President, Ron Kouchi (a 1975 WHS graduate), and State Representative (and Waimea resident), Dee Morikawa.  The ceremony was streamed live on HawaiiStream so if you missed it, catch it online.

It was a great year… we are starting to get some of our end of course and preliminary SBAC math data.  I’ll post those results on our school website and also on this blog within the next week.  We’re gearing up for our summer programs – credit recovery and a summer bridge program for incoming 9th graders.  We’re also undergoing several renovation projects on school; custodians will be busy with those projects as well as the numerous classroom changes needed for next school year.

As mentioned last week’s blog, we have created a one-credit, reading and writing support course for this coming school year.  Students were selected for this class based upon their test scores, reading lexile scores, and teacher recommendation; this class will help students to succeed in all classes with the reading and writing skills that will be taught.  Letters were sent home to parents advising them of this schedule change for their students and if they have any questions or concerns, to call the office.

Next year we will also continue to push for deeper learning, leveraged through the use of technology and data to inform all of our decision for students, staff, and our school.  We will have more mobile labs out in classrooms next year, especially in our core classes.

Have a fun, safe, and restful summer everyone.  Please remind your student to continue to read over the summer to keep in ‘school shape!’

Here’s your announcements; have a good week everyone.

Countdown to graduation, looking forward to next year.....

Hello everyone,

Four more days of school for our seniors; their big day, May 29th, is coming up fast!  If you are planning to attend graduation, we start at 6:30 pm on the front lawn.  Reserved seating is by ticket only…. Please plan to arrive early to avoid traffic issues and to find a good spot to hang out with family and friends.

We will continue with End of Course exams in Biology, Algebra 2, and US History.  Students need to study and prepare for these exams as they count for 15% of their final grades.  Please push your student to finish the year strong, complete all assignments, and to study hard for final exams.

In planning for next year, we have created a one-credit, reading and writing support course.  Students were selected for this class based upon their test scores, reading Lexile scores, and teacher recommendation; this class will help students to succeed in all classes with the reading and writing skills that will be taught.

We will also continue to push for deeper learning at Waimea High School.  This will be leveraged through the use of technology and data to inform all of our decision for students, staff, and our school.  We are planning to place more mobile labs out in classrooms next year, especially in our core classes.  We will also be issuing brand new Chromebooks to our incoming 9th graders; this is super exciting for all of us as we believe moving Waimea HS to a 1:1 device school will open up worlds of possibilities for our students and teachers.  We are finalizing the parent and student handbook, policies, and agreements that will come with the roll out of our Chromebooks and will share them with parents when we begin school in July.

Here’s your announcements; have a good week everyone.

Hello everyone,

As Mrs. Matsumura pointed out, this is the last 5-day week of this school year, leaving only 12 more days with students.  We are starting end of course exams this week Tuesday in each of the labs -- please see below for the specifics.  We're also doing COMPASS testing for students interested in taking KCC courses next year on both Tuesday and Thursday in the LRC.  On Wednesday, Mr. Souza and his culinary students will host a special staff breakfast starting at 7 am;  after school, KCC will be sending some faculty to speak to seniors who are still unsure of their post-HS plans.  Please speak to your student this week and let him/her know about this opportunity.  Senior song practice also kicks up, meeting daily (except Friday b/c of the special schedule).  Finally, Friday will be uber-busy with May Day Assembly in the morning and Senior Luau on the front lawn/Blue and White football game at Hanapepe Stadium in the evening.

Have a great week everyone; here's your announcements:
