Happy Holidays to all!!

This is the last week of quarter 2/semester 1.... please remind your student to get all of his/her work in on time to teachers as they will be finalizing grades soon.  Students who have been doing credit recovery through e2020 need to be at the 50% completion point in order to move on in the spring.

The teachers and staff at WHS are working very hard to improve student outcomes and to prepare them for spring testing; most are tutoring students before, during, and after school on a daily basis.  If you have any questions or concerns, please be sure to communicate with your student's teachers or counselor as we have to work together to ensure this happens.

I'd like to take this opportunity to wish each of you a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year in 2015.  Enjoy the 3 week break with your friends and family!

Mrs. Anguay  :)

Boys Basketball Events -- come and support them!

Please come out and support the WHS boys' basketball team this weekend.  The Blue and White fundraiser for both teams will be on Saturday, December 13th.  There will be three games that evening -- JV starts at 5 pm, varsity tips off at 6 pm, and a special alumni game begins at 7 pm.  For a $10 donation, you gain admittance to the games AND a beef stew dinner plate!  Then the next morning, the JV boys have a kalua pig fundraiser with pick up at the gym on Sunday, December 14th from 9 am - 11:30 am.  Tickets are available from any JV player and are $10 each.

Thank you very much!

Things we need you to know....

You have all heard of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the new test our students will be taking this year, the Smarter Balanced Assessment, that will tell us how our students and school is doing relative to the other states who have implemented CCSS.

All states/schools who have tested their students on the new assessments have found their scores have dipped considerably.  We will be no different.  I am attaching part of a power point presentation that our teachers will be reviewing over the next two weeks so you can begin to see how different the new test is compared to the old Hawaii State Assessment (HSA).  Students will face 6 types of questions or prompts and they will all required much more thought and computer interaction than previously required.

  • they will have multiple choice questions that will have multiple correct responses; there will be questions where they have to get Part A and Part B correct in order to earn points
  • they will have constructed responses -- short writings to prompts that will require them to read a selected article/piece and support their response with evidence from the article
  • they will have to do multiple page essays, again citing evidence from an article that will be multiple pages long
  • they will have to do performance tasks over a 2 day (or more) time frame -- they will have to create a product, perform a demonstration, or write a response.  It's an open-ended task that will have a rubric for students to gauge their answer against
  • technology enhanced items -- students will have to replace text with options from a drop-down menu
  • technology enabled items -- students will have to work with a video, computer text read aloud, or some widget while working on their response

This new test will require students to be persistent and patient.  It will require them to think and work a lot harder on a test than they ever have in the past.  We need you to start talking to your student about this new test and encouraging him/her to not give up and to work through each problem, each essay, each performance task to the best of their ability.  As a school we are working on ways we can support students across all content areas so that they can be successful, not only on the SBA, but in life, as the skills they need to do well on this test will surely help them in adulthood.

Have a good week everyone, here's the bulletin:
