This is a busy time for teachers and staff.  We’re begin to formulate our school’s  Academic and Financial Plan for next year, our teachers’ master schedule, our Title 1 Comprehensive Needs Analysis, and continue training and preparing for the upcoming SBAC tests.  We are also looking at other ways we can help to support student achievement through systemic changes at the school level.  All of these items are processed through our department heads/Academic Review Team and then our teachers and staff with the understanding that everything we do has to be what’s best for kids.  That sometimes means that changes have to/will be made that are not popular or are different from what has been the tradition in the past but in order to move ahead as a school to fully prepare our students for life after graduation, we will make those changes.

This past week a few classes were invited to a very last minute presentation by motivational speaker, Daryl "Sammy" Sampaga from the Big Island.  You may have seen the front page story in the Garden Island about Sammy’s message.  He was so well received by our students and staff that we are trying to find another date/time that he can return to WHS and address the rest of the school.  We will also be distributing flyers throughout the community about the Darwin Roadshow presentation that will be held at the gym on February 18th by Duke University scientists.  Please bring your family for an evening of learning more about science and evolution in nature.

Have a great week everyone; here’s your announcements.

Hello everyone and welcome to week 2 of the spring semester.

VP Asahi and I met with counselors last week to go over students who have failed multiple courses and are in danger of failing the year or who may not graduate in May.  We will be calling in students and parents to have individual meetings over the next few weeks to encourage a renewed sense of urgency in completing work and taking school seriously.  For some students and families, we may have to begin conversations about alternative ways to continue their education.  This is a grave concern of mine as we do not offer credit recovery courses anymore during the school day; students who fail a course need to make up the credit on their own time through e2020.  If your son or daughter did not pass all of his or her classes in first semester, be sure to remind him/her of this reality and speak to their counselor too in case a schedule change needs to be made.  Most of all, please encourage your student to not give up and persist in giving his/her best effort every day, in every class, with every teacher.

Also, please take a few minutes to read the handout from Superintendent Matayoshi that was sent home with each student on Friday.  It contains some very important information about the upcoming new SBAC test juniors will be taking in April.

Finally, please be sure to scroll through the calendar in the right hand column of my blog…. You will find upcoming school events that you can add to your personal or family calendar.

Have a great week everyone; here’s your announcements.

Happy New Year everyone and welcome back to school!  I hope you had a festive holiday season with family and friends and are ready for all the joy and challenges 2015 will bring to us all.

Waimea HS received two awesome gifts over the Christmas break:

1.        WHS and our feeder schools – Waimea Canyon MS, Eleele, and Kekaha Schools – will be visited by Duke University’s traveling science show, called ‘The Darwin Roadshow.’  The North Carolina scientists will be on campus during the day on Wednesday February 18th to do an all-school assembly.  That same evening, we will open up the gym at 5:30 pm and invite the entire community to come and participate in this once in a lifetime opportunity to see this outstanding science exhibit.

2.       WHS will receive a “Not Even Once” mural painted by Trysen Kaneshige in March 2015.  Trysen painted the “Believe in Your Dreams” mural at Kauai HS as his senior project two years ago.  Since then, he’s painted four other murals at schools on Oahu, Kauai, and Molokai while still managing to attend college full time on the mainland.  The theme “Not Even Once” encourages students to choose a drug-free lifestyle.

You will be receiving your student’s semester 1/quarter 2 grades shortly.  Please take time to sit down with your son or daughter and review not only their academic grade but their GLO marks as well.  The GLOs that all students are receiving grades on – self-directed learner and community contributor – are critical skills that we believe all students must develop before leaving WHS and heading off for more school, the military, or work.  You will notice that academic grades and GLO marks are closely related… students who are focused and conscientious about their education receive good grades.  Students who are conscious of how their words, actions, and attitudes affect others rarely receive referrals or get into trouble at school.

You will also be receiving a packet of information about the new Smarter Balanced Assessment tests that our juniors will be taking this April.  These tests are considerably more rigorous and longer (8 hours to complete) than any testing our students have been exposed to previously.  They will be doing more writing and will have to justify their responses by pulling information from multiple sources of information.  They will have multiple choice questions that will have multiple correct answers.  They will have to manipulate data and make conclusions based on that data.  Even if you don’t have a junior, please read the packet carefully as there will be suggestions on how parents can best support and help prepare their students for these new tests.

Finally, please be sure to scroll through the calendar in the right hand column of my blog…. You will find upcoming school events that you can add to your personal or family calendar.

Have a great week everyone; here’s your announcements.
