·         Kira Nobriga who came in 3rd in the state for Physical Therapy

Students will be fundraising furiously to help defray travel expenses… please kokua if they come knocking at your door!

It was a busy weekend with the JROTC Menehune Challenge on campus with visiting teams from Mililani, Punahou, Baldwin and the Walter Souza Baseball Tournament and Waimea Invitational Softball Tournament… hope you had a chance to catch our students in action.  We welcome back our soccer boys who represented us at the D2 state championships this week at Waipio; they lost two very close games but gained valuable experience that will help them improve for next year.  Also, the volleyball boys are returning from a good showing at the Longy Okamoto preseason tournament at McKinley High School.

We have an early release on Monday – B Day schedule to even out the rest of the week.  Tuesday is a special bell schedule day due to ACT testing for all 9, 10, and 11th graders; seniors will be up at Kokee for their class picnic.  Please get your son or daughter to bed early on Tuesday and be sure they eat a good breakfast before coming to school that day.  All students’ phones will be collected that morning before testing and will be returned at the end of the day when everyone is done.  We need to do this to ensure that there’s no testing violations that would invalidate students’ scores.

Have a great week everyone!

Mrs. Anguay  J

EARLY RELEASE -- Monday, February 29th

Parents and guardians....... we have an early release time for students for next Monday, February 29th at 1:37 pm.  We've adjusted our bell schedule for the week since Tuesday March 1st is our school-wide testing day, which means we're losing one of our B days.  Re-purposing Monday's schedule from a 'skinny Monday' where students go to all 7 periods to a B Day where they see periods 5, 6,and 7 teachers, allows us to not lose an instructional B day.

Thank you for your support and understanding.

Working with WCMS teachers, working on our plans....

Last week Friday our math teachers and our special education teachers had opportunities to work with our Waimea Canyon MS partners, looking for opportunities to align our programs and curriculum/instruction better to ensure that all of our students are successful.  The math teachers worked with consultant Wes Yuu to shore up the Algebra 1 essential skills while our special education departments shared information about the Hookipa and Department of Vocational Rehabilitation programs.

Teachers are also working hard on our Spring 2017 WASC report while simultaneously preparing our Academic Plan for next year.  This week, the second Focus group presentation takes place at Tuesday’s extended faculty meeting; teachers will have a chance to review and add to the work of their peers.  Department heads will meet on Thursday and will work with Ms. Asahi to be sure we’re staying on track for achieving this year’s benchmarks.

Softball and baseball teams are hosting their tournaments this week beginning Thursday; come out and watch some great games.  Also, good luck to the boys’ soccer team as they leave for states this week!

Have a great week everyone!

Mrs. Anguay  J

Short week but lots going on.....

The next few weeks are super busy with athletes traveling off island for preseason and state tournaments for wrestling and soccer, hosting our own tournaments for baseball and softball, and participating in the Waimea Town Celebration going on til next weekend.  Please remind your student to continue to keep his or her grades up during this hectic time of fun and activities as we wind down towards the end of quarter 3.

I’m repeating this message from last week’s blog as it’s very important for all to know:

  • ·         We’re are finalizing teachers’ and students’ schedules for next year and will be looking very closely at assessment data, student grades, and teacher recommendations to determine which students will be placed in reading/writing or math workshop courses.  These classes will provide intensive academic support to help students to ‘catch up’ with some core skills and to be more successful in school.  We are also looking at running summer credit recovery classes again, beginning immediately after the regular school year ends where students will have an opportunity to make up a failed class via e2020 online.  Tuition will be $170 to cover the cost of teachers and the additional e2020 licenses we have to purchase for summer credit recovery.  Students will have class for 5 weeks and will be tutored by WHS teachers hired for the summer.  Counselors will be contacting identified students and parents soon re: workshop classes and/or summer credit recovery program.  If you have any questions or would like to know if your son or daughter could be placed in one of these classes, please contact counselors Mr. Nitta and Mrs. Guillet at 338-6800.

Have a great week everyone!

Mrs. Anguay  J
