2 more weeks to go.....

Thank you for talking to your students about the After School app.  We've had numerous calls at the office for more information; am posting another link below to a story that was posted by KHON yesterday.

This is the last week of school for our seniors….. a bittersweet time of stress, tears, and joy.  Please encourage your students to finish strong as we’re still testing and working til the end of the school year!

Graduation begins at 6:30 pm on the front lawn this Friday…. come early if you do not have a reserved ticket.  Our guests that evening will be Board of Education member Maggie Cox, Assistant Superintendent Clyde Sonobe, and UH Hilo Academic Dean, Randy Hirokawa who is a Waimea HS graduate.  We’re asking that the public stay away from the old grandstand area on the baseball field; it’s going to be fenced off as it will either be undergoing extensive renovation or eventually will be demolished.  Either way, it’s an off-limits area for everyone so I’m going to ask that everyone please steer clear from the area.

Have a great week everyone.

Mrs. Anguay  J

Parents and Guardians -- heads up about After School, a new app....

Parents..... I am asking for your help. There is a new app called After School that our students have been using over the past 48 hours that has caused nothing but grief as it is enables students to anonymously cyber bully each other. I'm posting a link to a story by the Washington Post that explains more. On our side, we're shutting down access via the DOE network, however students can still access the internet on their phones via their personal data plans. Please speak to your son or daughter today, ask them to show you the app and then delete it. Thank you.

Summer!

Just a reminder that we're accepting applications for a few summer programs that we're going to be running at Waimea HS.

First, students who need to recover a credit should see their counselor immediately for a summer school application.  Classes will be delivered through e2020 but we will have staff members to help tutor students through.  These classes are $160 for a full credit, $80 for a half credit.

Second, incoming 9th graders should apply for our Summer Bridge program that begins June 9th and goes for 10 days in June.  This is a free program, funded by our Tokioka award, that will focus on preparing students for math and science.  Applications are available at WCMS and St. Theresa school offices and should be submitted to the high school as soon as possible as space is limited.

Third, we will be hosting a free one credit KCC class on aquaponics on three Saturdays in June.  Again, space is limited and students need to see me soon as space is very limited.

Finally, we will be hosting an English 'boot camp' to help transition our graduating seniors who will be entering KCC this fall.  This is a free class as well, taught by KCC instructor Mary Alexander on our campus.  Please see me if interested.

Summer offerings on campus and through KCC.....

We’re in the last few weeks of school.  Summer school applications for students who need to recover a lost credit are being accepted from now until May 27th; please see your grade level counselor for an application if your student needs to make up a class he/she failed earlier.  We will also be running a free Summer Bridge program for incoming 9th graders to help them transition successfully to high school.  Applications are at the middle school and at St. Theresa; please refer your family and friends to this program.

Also, we will be offering a free 1-credit class on aquaponics during the month of June – three Saturdays.  Classes will be held on our campus and on KCC’s.  If your student is interested, please have him/her come sign up with me; we will take the first 20 students who commit to the time frame.

Another KCC opportunity for our WHS graduates will be a KCC English 100 ‘boot camp’ class that will be held on our campus on August 4, 5, 8, and 9.  Also free, this will be an intensive introduction to the rigors of English at the college level and will be taught by KCC instructor Mary Alexander.  Any student who will be entering KCC this fall is eligible to attend this class.  If your son/daughter is interested, please have them sign up with me.  Again, we will take the first 20 students who commit to attending the class.

Have a great week everyone.

Mrs. Anguay  J

LOTS of testing going on.... AP, EOC, and SBA this week!

Advanced Placement (AP) and End of Course (EOC) exams begin this week for students; we’re also continuing to test juniors on the Smarter Balanced test.  Please be sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats breakfast before coming to school on testing days.

Applications are at the middle school; please refer your family and friends to this program.  Also, since we are in the last few weeks of school please be sure to talk to your child about finishing the year strong – academically and by making right choices.

Have a great week everyone.

IMPORTANT: Achieve3000 – students will be prompted to take the level set test the next time they log on to their account beginning May 2.  Please advise students to take this seriously as we’re still looking at scores to complete rosters for reading/writing workshop classes for next fall; we’re looking at overall growth for this school year.  Also, we’d like our school average Lexile score to hit 1000 – we’re just under 900 right now.  According to Achieve3000 staff, our school average score hasn’t adjusted much the past few months because we need more students doing more articles each month.  Our score won’t go down; it’ll only go up after the level set.
