Ice cream social on Wednesday!

This week during faculty and department meeting times, teachers will continue to work on differentiation strategies to ensure the support and success of each student.  Everyone will be sharing what they’ve done differently since our two professional development sessions with district staff; we’ll be examining actual student work samples to find common threads or common misconceptions and plan for remediation.  We’ll do this again in two and a half weeks, which will help to keep us focused on using classroom data appropriately.

Teachers have also been working on our WASC accreditation report for our visit next spring.  They have been divided into five FOCUS groups and will be tasked with answering to what extent has Waimea HS teachers, staff, and administration achieved the specific criteria for each section.  Soon, we will be asking students, parents, and community members to also join our FOCUS groups – please volunteer your time if/when you are called.

Still got a lot of KIF sports going on…. Come out and support your fave team/athlete this week!

Have a great week everyone!

Mrs. Anguay  J

RTI workshop and future implications at Waimea High....

Our school just sent a team to a four-day training on how to implement a school wide system of academic and behavioral interventions as part of our continuous school improvement process.   We took a close look at the four types of school data – demographic, perception, achievement, and programs/process – and began planning ways we will support students who need extra help with reading, math, and writing, beginning with effective instruction and behavioral supports in each class.  We are looking closely at each student’s test scores, from their HSA in middle school to their current STAR reading and math scores.  Those data points, along with grades, attendance, and teacher recommendations will determine which students will be placed in secondary support classes like a Reading/Writing or Math Workshop class next year so we can help bring up skill levels.  Parents of students whose schedules need to be changed will be advised before school releases for summer.  In the interim, please encourage your student to take all tests seriously, especially STAR and Achieve, as we will use the information from those assessments to select students for support classes.

Have a great week everyone!

Mrs. Anguay  J

West Complex PD Day tomorrow, Monday January 16, 2106

All West Complex Schools (Kalaheo, Eleele, Kekaha, WCMS, and WHS) will have a staff Professional Day TOMORROW, January 11th…. No school for students.  Classes will resume as normal the following day, Tuesday January 12th.

At tomorrow’s PD day, we will be continuing our work on differentiation with help from District staff, Caroline Freudig and Mariann Tabuchi, and will also start on our WASC focus group work in preparation for our accreditation visit in spring 2017.  Teachers will be reviewing our Comprehensive Needs Analysis, Future Ready implementation plan, and most recent student achievement and perception data to begin answering the prompts for the report.  We will be asking for student, parent, and community input as we work through this process over the next year; please come to our next SCC meeting on January 25th to learn how you can participate and contribute to our report.

Have a great week everyone!
