3 more weeks til the end of semester 1!

Hope you all had a fun, food and family-filled weekend and are ready for the beginning of the holiday rush and end of quarter 2 or semester one!   There are just three more weeks left in this quarter/semester…has your student:

·         Completed AR reading for English?
·         Done all Achieve articles assigned?
·         Completed all papers/essays/research for each class?
·         Studied for all tests and quizzes?

Please encourage your student to finish strong this month.  Recently, we have had a number of students plagiarize and or copy entire sections off of the internet or off another students’ work and turn it in as their own.  While the immediate consequence for academic dishonesty is a suspension and re-doing the required work, the long-term consequence is students don’t learn the content or class material and that will come back to haunt him or her later on a test as teachers spiral student learning – in other words, each week they continuously build upon what was taught in previous weeks.  Please help us to remind students that it doesn’t pay to take a short cut or easy way out and turn in work that is copied word for word or cut and pasted from someone else’s assignment.

Have a good week everyone.

Mrs. Anguay  J

Student Reviews, a short week, and some upcoming events....

My sincere apologies everyone…..it’s my fault for not double checking that the notices for early release and Student Review for this week did not go out earlier in the month.

This a short, 3 day week and students will be released at 11:30 am on Tuesday and Wednesday.  On Tuesday, parents can come on campus to meet with teachers from 1-4 pm or 5-8 pm in their classrooms.  Please check in at the main office for information, a map, and a copy of your student’s schedule.

A couple of upcoming events:

·         On Wednesday, approximately 20 CTE students will travel to Waimea Canyon Middle School to do their presentation on the five different career pathways at WHS to their 8th grade students and teachers.
·         On Thursday, December 3 at 6 pm, the documentary movie, “Most Likely to Succeed” will be shown for free at the Waimea Theatre.  Hosted by WCMS and the Education Institute of Hawaii, this feature length film examines the history of education and looks at the growing shortcomings of our existing school model in today’s innovative world.  A leading independent film review says that “this film should be a required course for all parents and educators.”   If you’re interested in attending, click on the following link to register:

If you have any questions, please contact EIH Executive Director, Darrel Galera at darrel.galera@gmail.com or at (808) 778-6378.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone; enjoy the long weekend (safely!!) with family and friends

'Discover Waimea' on YouTube.....

Last Friday, we took 23 WHS students to Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School to do our ‘Discover Waimea’ presentation about the wide range of career path options and programs available to our students.  It was a great opportunity for our students to practice their public speaking and persuasive techniques …. It was also a fun learning experience for the CKMS students who saw student-created videos, a JROTC drill team presentation, got their blood pressure checked, and just talked story with high schoolers.  Click on the link below to see the YouTube video created for the event by senior Alyssa Pigao.

Veteran's Day holiday, recap SOTF and VB Conferences....

This is a short week with Veteran’s Day right in the middle…. Please take a few moments to thank a veteran or someone currently in the military for their service.

Last week’s Schools of the Future Conference was an awesome experience for the 10 Waimea HS staff members who attended.  We had an opportunity to learn about some of the latest technology available to help increase student achievement – from cool (and free) mobile apps that can be downloaded to our devices on campus to wearable technology that truly extends classroom walls.  Our department heads/leadership team will be working together to see how we can apply what we’ve just learned in our classrooms here….. pretty exciting stuff!

Our three staff members who attended the Victoria Bernhardt data training had an opportunity to begin writing our school’s Comprehensive Needs Analysis, which looks at our four types of data – demographic, perception, programs/processes, and student achievement.  This is going to help us to write our Academic Plan for next year and to prepare for our WASC visit in Spring 2017.

This week Friday we will be sending a team of students and staff to Chiefess Kamakahelei MS to do our ‘Discover Waimea’ presentation to their 8th graders who live in Kalaheo…. With the ultimate goal of encouraging them to come west for high school.  Although we had a small turnout at our Kalaheo School night event last Thursday, it was good opportunity for our students to practice their public speaking skills as the audience went through their various exhibits.

Have a good week everyone.

Mrs. Anguay
