A busy week ahead, reflections from last Thursday....

Every week is going to be a super busy one from now until the end of the school year!

·         On Monday, the final Performance Based Assessments and presentations for students seeking the first-ever CTE recognition diploma being offered by the Department of Education will be done by Mr. Souza’s classes.  Students will be presenting their research and personal reflections about their learning before a panel of judges from the community.
·         On Monday, the JROTC cadets/program will be visited by Battalion personnel from the mainland and Oahu; our health and biology classes will hear a special presentation from FBI agents from Oahu about some new ‘designer’ drugs that young people/students are getting involved with
·         Tuesday – JROTC and health students will be participating in the mass casualty triage drill at the airport
·         Wednesday evening is the Year End Student Recognition event starting at 5:30 pm in the gym
·         Friday – Senior Luau takes place on the front lawn.  If you’re interested in purchasing tickets, please contact Mrs. Davalos

It was a great honor to be awarded the Masayuki Tokioka Award last Thursday night; it’s recognition of the hard work that our entire team of teachers and staff have put in over the years to ensure that Waimea students are on track to be college, career, and community ready when they leave us.  The money is cool too!!  We’ll use it to run our Summer Bridge program for incoming 9th graders again (free!!) and coordinate with KCC for other Early College credit options for our students here on campus.  I’d like to share my favorite picture from that evening…. It’s with two of my grandchildren, Hunter and Hailey.  They’re being there to celebrate the award was the highlight of the night for me.

Earlier that same day, my husband and I attended the Governor’s Review & Awards Ceremony to celebrate JROTC’s 100th anniversary in Hawaii.  Our own cadet Battalion Commander, Devon Hartsell, received special recognition that day… I was so proud of him!

Have a great week everyone.

Mrs. Anguay  J

WHS improvements in UH English and Math Enrollment

There's a nice article in today's Garden Island newspaper that talks about how more high school students on Kauai are taking college courses through the Early College, Running Start, or Jump Start programs. However, the reporter misinterpreted the data that was shared with her. Here's the slides that show Waimea High School's improvements... they're impressive. The slides show that from Fall 2013 to Fall 2015, WHS students have made great gains in the number of students who are qualifying/placing into UH English and Math college-level (100 or higher) courses and the corresponding drop in the number of students who need to take remedial courses. Click on the links below:

Continuing with performance based assessments and presentations.....

We’re continuing our Performance Based Assessments and presentations for students seeking the first-ever CTE recognition diploma being offered by the Department of Education.  This week students from Ms. Evens’ and Mr. Souza’s classes will be presenting their research and personal reflections about their learning before a panel of judges from the community.

This week we’re also completing our analysis of student growth data over the year.  We will use this information to fill our 11th grade reading/writing workshop classes as well as our math workshop classes for 9th and 10th graders next year.  These will be elective classes that count towards graduation but will provide invaluable support for students who need a little extra help in making strides towards grade level proficiency.  We’re also using this data to determine which students may need summer school; counselors will be calling in students to speak with them individually about their options.  More information regarding summer school will be out within the next 2 weeks.

This week marks the halfway mark for quarter 4…. Please encourage your student to stay on top of each of his/her assignments and to be in classes daily, especially seniors!

Have a great week everyone.

Mrs. Anguay  J

Support our CTE students!

This year’s senior class will be the first ever to receive the new Department of Education’s CTE recognition diploma.  To earn one, students need to be a “completer” in their pathway, meaning they’ve completed the introductory class and a concentration class as well as successfully complete several additional tasks:
·         Pass an online test that measures their overall knowledge of their pathway,
·         Write a comprehensive paper and present it to a panel of judges, and
·         Pass their Performance Based Assessment, or PBA, in front of a panel of community judges who represent the business or career area.  The PBA requires students to complete a scenario – for example, the health pathway students needed to demonstrate that they can simulate an office visit – introducing him/herself and stating the purpose of the visit, following proper precautions through handwashing and glove-wearing, taking the patient’s temperature, blood pressure, and assessing the patient’s medical history and offering suggestions for current and future needs.  Students were asked to do this while taking into consideration the patient’s advanced health directives and the accompanying ethical and legal issues.

Over the next two weeks, approximately 32 Waimea HS students will be attempting to pass their PBA….. we’d like to wish each of them good luck!

Have a great week everyone!
