Teacher learners, student learners....

Aloha everyone!

This week we will be focusing on staff professional development which in turn leads to increased student learning.  On Monday, Ms. Asahi and I will be attending the Hawaii Academies meeting at Kapaa HS.  Waimea HS is part of a consortium of 16 high schools across the state that is focusing on preparing all students to be college and career ready by graduation; we meet bi-monthly to share training and resources to achieve that goal.  This month’s meeting will be about community and business partners and how schools leverage their support…. ironic because on Wednesday our science and math teachers will be working with staff from  the University of Hawaii, DLNR, PMRF, Learning Coalition, and Developing Critical Thinkers, Inc. from Oahu.  We will be learning how to use vocabulary maps that will stretch students to think critically and deeply about the topic at hand.  Our guiding question for Wednesday’s staff training will be, “why is the Waimea River dying?”  The exciting thing about this training is that the framework is applicable across all content areas and grade levels.  In fact, we will be working to train not only our Waimea HS teachers, but our feeder school teachers as well in this framework next school year.  Pretty exciting stuff!

Have a good week everyone; hope you all have a great Easter weekend with your friends and family.

Here’s your announcements!

Quarter 4 begins....

Aloha everyone!

Welcome back to school; hope everyone had a fun and restful spring break.  In three weeks we will begin our Smarter Balanced Assessments with the junior class.  Teachers have been preparing students for these high stakes tests by reviewing content and exposing them to the different format they’ll see on the actual tests— questions that will have more than one correct  answer, short and extended essays, and embedded technology like videos and audio clips that they’ll have to incorporate into their answers.  The test is a computer adaptive test which means that student questions will be given based on how well/not so well the student answers the previous question(s).  All in all, the Smarter Balanced Assessment is extremely different and much longer (8 hours total) than any test our students have taken before.  Even if you don’t have a junior student, please take some time to go on to this link and look around at some of the test questions your son or daughter will be asked to answer.

http://www.smarterbalanced.org/       Click on ‘take the practice test’ and see what the grade 11 math and English questions look like.

We are in the middle of spring sports – boys’ volleyball, baseball, girls’ softball, and boys/girls tennis, golf, and track.  Please see the calendar below for dates and times that our students will be competing this week and come support our student-athletes!

Have a good week everyone; here’s your announcements!

End of Quarter 3, beginning of spring sports....

Aloha everyone!

Last week of quarter 3 is finally here!  Students will be busy taking exams, turning in assignments and missing work to bring up their grades before going out on Spring Break.  Please encourage them to do their best work, with their best effort.

Spring sports are in full swing now – track, baseball, softball, tennis, and golf.  Please go and support your favorite student athletes over the next few weeks as they compete against the other HS on Kauai.  Speaking of supporting, if you still want to purchase a package of smoke meat from our mural fundraiser, we have a few more that are available.  Please call the office for more information.

Have a good week everyone; here’s your announcements!
