Life lessons.....

"Always do your best.  What you plant now, you will harvest later"....... Og Mandino

As teachers we are in an unique position, able to motivate and encourage students through difficult times from a different perspective and point of reference than their parent.  For many students, and especially our student athletes, this first quarter has been challenging.  We all like to win or come out on top of the competition but if and when we don't win, it's okay because the final score does not define or dictate who we are.  We learn from our mistakes, pick ourselves up, hold our heads high, and get out and try again.  My favorite Japanese proverb is "Fall seven times; get up eight."  As long as we keep getting up we will win because we're building life skills of persistence, resiliency, and tenacity. These are the real gifts, this is the real learning we want for all of our students at Waimea High School.

Here's the weekly bulletin..... remember it's the last week of the quarter so please tell your student(s) to finish strong, get in all assignments, and STUDY HARD for any tests or quizzes.

Welcome followers!

Aloha parents and guardians,

I'm not sure how many of you realize that there's a  blog with a calendar of school events that is sent out each week?  I've added your email addresses so you can keep up with what's going on at Waimea HS.  You can go all the way back to the first entry in July and catch up with all of the posts.  If you have any questions, you can email me at mahina_anguay@notes.k12.hi.us.

Thank you!

Shop and Score!

Please help support Waimea HS athletics by shopping at Times or Big Save from now until October 14, 2014.  Every time you check out, be sure to give the cashier our school's code -- 371 -- so we can earn points.  We're trying to earn a share of $250,000 worth of Adidas equipment and uniforms that will be given out to Hawaii high schools.  Last year, Waimea HS finished second overall in the state.... so please continue to help the Big Blue!

Thank you very much!

Formative assessments and GLO grades

This week I received a list of all of our students’ mid-quarter progress reports which showed me their grades, their GLO marks, as well as their teacher comments.  I was particularly interested in reviewing the names of students who received three or more “U” marks for GLO #1, Self-Directed Learner or GLO #2, Community Contributor, because Ms. Asahi and I are following up with each of those students and their parents.  These are students that we want to catch now before the official quarter 1 grade are posted because if they don’t turn it around, these students will go on behavior probation and have to clear grades and GLOs if they want to participate in any extra-curricular activities in quarter 2.

However, I was struck by the number of students earning A and B grades who were also receiving “U” grades, mostly in GLO #2 Community Contributor.  This concerns me…. In conversations with these students, I’m reminding them that their job is to be a student and it’s their responsibility to make sure they’re doing all of their own work, turning it in on time, studying for tests and quizzes….. but at the same time being respectful of others around them – students and teachers.  School is much more than a grade on a report card.  By holding our students accountable for their GLO behavior, we’re teaching them to be self-reliant, responsible global citizens who are respectful, and cooperate and contribute to the greater good of our community.  These are life skills that they will take with them and use daily, long after they leave us at Waimea HS.  This is truly an example of “he wa’a, he moku; he moku, he wa’a” which is the philosophy we want all of our students to embrace.

Here are the announcements for this coming week:

How busy are we?

Hello everyone!

It’s funny how each week we seem to get busier and busier…. We’re in the middle of five KIF athletic seasons: football, girls’ VB, air riflery, bowling, and cross-county.  We’re continuing staff training in student learning objectives and the new language arts curriculum; we’re training our peer mediators and 9-11th graders on how to manage their PTP portfolios on line through their personal Google docs.  We’re preparing to launch our response to intervention math program for selected 10th and 11th graders which means training staff and talking to students; we have evening meetings with our school community council and PTSA….. and all of this takes place this week!

Parents and guardians will soon receive mid-quarter progress reports that advise how their student is progressing so far this year.  Please be sure to communicate with teachers and counselors if you have any concerns about how your son or daughter is doing academically or socially.

Here's the bulletin....have a good week!
